Venice of the east- UDAIPUR- city of lakes

Udaipur city is one of the best hill stations in India though some of you might be not in the mood to believe this. Most of us Indians who are not from Rajasthan state which also gives shelter to the great Thar desert. Then comes the obvious conclusion that Rajasthan is a desert like place all over and apart from sand and dry heat plus cactus, this is where we have gone wrong. When I came to Udaipur for my one and a half year debacle with an NGO job i just saw how wrong i was. The place has beautiful lakes spread out all over the city which also fulfill the drinking water requirement of its people. In addition it has settled right among the Arravali /\/\/\/\/\/\/\ range. So it has the most beautiful treasure of biodiversity and every nature lover -indian or foreign should drop by and try out the following scenic places. one more wrong notion that i would like to nip in the bud is that of Rains- rainy season is the most beautiful in the region that just adds to the sheen of the green in the area makes it sparkling clean, drippy wet and very romantic.

A list for those breeds of people who appreciate natural beauty over man made temples/ architecture etc. What I mean by this is that it does rain in Udaipur so keep out all your notions of Desert climate in your rucksack rightaway!
  • Phulwari ki naal at Kotra (125 kms from udaipur)
  • Sajjangarh wildlife sanctuary or Monsson palace (shooting spot for Dhamaal 6 kms from udaipur)
  • Baghdarrah Nature Park at Jhameshwar kotra (20 kms from Udaipur- also offers tent accommodation at a reasonable rate for a couple, interact with local villagers and gain knowledge of the important plant and animal species being protected by the people of the village themselves to sustain responsible tourism. Accommodation available from October- March only). Its a great camping site and a treat for all those croc.....crocodile lovers as the government will be pouring in 10 lacs to build a cemented place where these crocs can be on display for visitors. So go ahead come down to this place and have fun!

Other more popular tourist destination sites that are surrounded by greenery and also available more easily over internet searches include
  • Ranthambore tiger reserve
  • Sawaimansingh sanctuary
