Book review- Raj Patel’s Stuffed and starved

" From the farm to the fork" the story unfolds to gripping disturbing climax. Book review- Raj Patel’s Stuffed and starved A book that is not to be trusted simply by its non flashy cover. A book so well written about food that it initiates self introspection about how we never question some of the basic things in life like why have started eating cauliflower even in the winters when its used to be available only during the summers! Or why is mommy and dady now purchasing groceries from that mall by burning 1 litre of gas when they used to buy the same from the local grocery shop earlier when we were kids? Patel has made a non fiction book so curiously unlike a work of non fiction which ends up boring and not worth perusing once put down. Replete with examples from around the globe on movements trying to put this huge agroindustry accountable for its deeds the book simply talks about food. Its not a foodie’s delight but a nightmare which maybe every foodie might have conscious...

Do you really want to encourage your inquisitive child

If life is bitch then are we supposed to be dogs? Why did the intelligent beings make such proverbs? and why do we have to always take decisions which concern our life with the utmost concern for all others who might get affected by that decision? Well ,some of you might be thinking because man is a social animal you numbskull! Sorry but ibeg to differ, consider the following situations when bargaining for a better pay don’t we generate competition among our siblings? Why don’t we then consider the social harms? But that is money so everything is fine in one’s pursuit of money-individualism is key mantra of today but why do we have to have the consensus and good will of all other miniscule creatures as we try to obliterate all obstacles littering our path to Haven? Why is it so difficult to scale the unseen barriers and walls created by the most selfish in our society? for doing something which brings happiness in the smallest and the most direct ways? Who is to be trusted ...

Weird thursday in Mumbai

There is no one complete way to describe the events that happened today on my 2nd last day in Mumbai. The weird fast impersonal life of Mumbai. Things like stone and mud thrown in at me inside a cab in a not so weird hour of the afternoon, followed by immoral umbrella bottoms trying landing on my head scaring my wits out of my head and to put the icing on the cake to be witness to watching a weird psychotic break down of my room mate of 1 and half weeks who told me in her fever induced delirium : she wanted to go up there to God! Some days just start on the wrong side of the bed and we are just left wondering how and why did any of this days events were even executed with myself as the pawn to add taste to the witch's mixture. And as i have just started enjoying the feeling of being unemployed such happenings only add misery. Is someone listening?

Loafing around in mumbai

Flamingoes

I am not a bird watcher I love birds however But i am not at all enthusiastic about watching birds on a hot weekend afternoon just because the goon in my office want to send me there to make a fried omelet of me So i am tempted to call flamingoes fuking flamingoes just because i had to slog it out though i had planned to see them when i came to Mumbai but today i think i saw 3000 of them .....looking like pink litter on brown dirt! spread around in the mangroves of Sewri in mumbai, Just then the litter seemed to move towards the right when a human being skiing on a wooden plank by one foot and one hand went to make a catch of the crabs in marshy soil. Hell a normal person wouldnt even dream of setting a foot on this quick sand like soil leave alone going crab hunting, i guess its money that can make someone go to various levels of rsik taking behaviours.

The Beauty of a Mango Tree in fruiting!

A simple seed in the beginning. A small shoot raises its head from the womb of the moist and soft earth. You see tiny, curled leaves still shy of the air waiting to be showered by the encompassing sun to open their eyes to see the world on top of mama earth. Then it grows painstakingly slow as various predators play with its various parts at multiple points of time. One final day after god knows how many years My Mango Tree become strong and hard to deal with every blow given by a human hand except to the part on top where its still soft and tender! Then come summer and tiny and cute baby mangoes start coming out of nowhere, dancing to every move of the winds, swaying themselves like a dancer to the tune of rhythm -a site that is more captivating than any car made by jagaur. I hang out of my bathroom from the fourth floor, tempted by its wealth that has become ripe with every passing day and beg the Lord to just let me loot one of its numerous, tender, smooth, curvaceous fruits! And ...

Why do certain NGOs always oppsose?

When India became a democratic country and every body got this birth right to speak anything that was on thier minds the forefathers didnot realise that beyond a certain extent whatever is said will be crap! That is what i think is happening to people in NGOs today. They make a hue and cry over any darned thing that doesnt fit into their fantasy world. It starts with just a plain cribbing over a particular issue about which they cant do anything actually that can be called concrete! Then from their they issue orders to subordinates to collect info on the same so that they can pour over it and waste taxpayers money in various un imaginable forms. Finaly the government is coaxed to give a bit of attention the buckets of crap that is put infront of it by these NGOs and pass an line them in queue for potential discussion of mitigation of the crap especially since of these people of come out as the front line guards for environment conservation. Take the forest right act of 2007. Opposition...

The fine line between hypocrisy and advocacy.

The experienced hot shot : climate change is essential! Its going to ruin the entire future! (AND MY STOCK EXCHANGE MONEY) The lowly subordinate : yeah sure sir you bet we agree on that-climate change is going to have a diverse impact on livelihoods. The experienced hot shot : (irritated) ah well do whatever you were asked to do this morning and don’t forget to book my flight by business class and don’t forget to mention that airconditioned luxury car in our UNDP budget for climate change project. The lowly subordinate : Well if I may ask……why do ‘we’ want an AC car sir? The experienced hot shot : arrrrrrrrrrrrrrh growls, scowls and many ageing frowns later—have you ever understood the term; using for future investment {from a funder’s money}? Do you want to take that expense of the Mercedes C class from your salary? The lowly subordinate: ah well! (Gulp) now that you have made crystal clear I don’t think Sir there is anything left in the grey area but d...

Celebrating Mahashivratri -Environment friendly way

This year Mahashivratri- the most famous hindu festival that involves praising the Lord of Death- Lord Shiva, was different for me. Unlike most of the past years where I used to sit at home enjoy the holiday from school or work this year I celebrated it by doing something which was not entirely expected even by my great grandmother had she been alive today or by many other devotees or even my mom who pestered me to offer atleast milk to the great divine. In contrast and oblivious to her demands I was forced to join my office team and a truck load of some 80 volunteers from all walks of life at Borivalli national park or what some of you might know it as the Sanjay Gandhi national park –the Lungs of the polluted Mumbai city. Spread over 8 kms this beautiful national park is home to the shy leopard who loves to dine on humans every now and then but does it an a way that puts its life in danger as humans have this habit of poisoning every potential species which it sees as thr...

Mangroves of Mumbai

What are mangroves? these can be called trees that can grow upto the height of 120 ft that are buffers between the land and the sea and protect the land from continuous soil erosion from the tidal waves from what you just see in the pictures. The most exciting features about mangroves are they grow in quicksand like areas near oceans even if they are logged down for fuel wood they have the tendency to regenerate themselves ( just like the phoenix) when they are touched by sea water again mangroves line the entire coast of mumbai which goes upto some 1000 kms Humans as usual are at their best doing what thye have always been good at that is destroying the mangroves for persuing their acquaculture- fishy.. culture by cutting off the supply of fresh sea water to the mangroves. Check out some of these pictures which show the muddy area in between the beautiful greens which are natural protectors against storms and cyclones from the oceans. As most of you might be aware off that Mumbai the p...

Travel & living

This is the one channel that gives a nature lover like myself a real eyetonic and general knowledge about where , what is situated, especially good for those sodium lamped brains like myself who just refuse to love the beauty of geography. I really want to share the brilliance of this channel. The host roamed around with the New Zealand prime minister just like you would roam around with your childhood friend in a new place when you come down to meet her at her hometown. The brilliance of this episode was that it showed the PM - a woman- so carefree down to earth but yet with a never ending zeal for anything and everything. I learnt about a new therapy that is offered by the Kiwis- Thrill therapy- consisting of boating in a motor boat at speeds ranging from very stable and steady to high rash speed just to de stress person- methodology: from no stress to high stress and then reaching ground. a ride which i really was dying to have but couldnt as i was watching it on TV. Then the Brill...

The joys of being temporarily unemployed

waking up at 11.30 am! ........ watching tv till 1.00 pm then pondering over having something gooooooooood for lunch finally having whatever was cooked without bothering of the nutritional and physical impacts of such boring food that is cooked by a maid........ then take a newspaper and place thy booty on that armchair which has been basking itself to the right temperature in the winter sun, sit down and wallah the ecstasy of the warm sun seeping through the skin to make me feel just right amount of coziness while the world races by worrying about how theyll mange to get out of the office to meet their girl friends/ boyfriends or friends or parents after or during office hours. As a i close my eyes i can see the colourful circles of rainbows in my eyes as i sit in the afternoon sun and feel sleepy again, so i pick up the blanket which had been warming itself up in the sun and reach for my bed sitting on car tyres and a plank of wood made by some one really close to me and slip inside ...

Venice of the east- UDAIPUR- city of lakes

Udaipur city is one of the best hill stations in India though some of you might be not in the mood to believe this. Most of us Indians who are not from Rajasthan state which also gives shelter to the great Thar desert. Then comes the obvious conclusion that Rajasthan is a desert like place all over and apart from sand and dry heat plus cactus, this is where we have gone wrong. When I came to Udaipur for my one and a half year debacle with an NGO job i just saw how wrong i was. The place has beautiful lakes spread out all over the city which also fulfill the drinking water requirement of its people. In addition it has settled right among the Arravali /\/\/\/\/\/\/\ range. So it has the most beautiful treasure of biodiversity and every nature lover -indian or foreign should drop by and try out the following scenic places. one more wrong notion that i would like to nip in the bud is that of Rains- rainy season is the most beautiful in the region that just adds to the sheen of the green i...

Uncle Sam's Pizza

Udaipur - well known as the CITY OF LAKES didnot have a genuine Pizza outlet till November 07. Come 2008 and on my way from the railway station of Udaipur i see a shining board amongst some dirty travel boards. I stopped my friend immediately and we went back to check if it was really genuine! So we went back and found those round- without back support shiny little stools or chairs if you want to call them and some 4 young men eagerly searching our faces to check if we fell in the window shoppers group or just curious passers by. So we placed a delicious order of Vegi delight pizza and and some Garlic cheese bread with Jalapeno topping. So they seemed to have authentic ovens for pizza and when it came out i ll tell you how it looked and smelled but you gotta try it on your own to believe me. The waitor came with the pizza in a thermocol plate and nonbiodegradable plastic glass. Apart from that The small mushrooms just tender enough to melt in the mouth, the Green capsicum, and the oran...

BIOFUELS

Hey now biofuels are a fad!. It would be really cool to have your car run on biodiesel where your car will not only give you those extra miles that you always wanted have with the buck that you grudgingly give to the gas station owner. And finally it will also do what i really want every metal smoke oozing automobile should do- decrease environmental pollution Hold on before i really put all of you on the seventh heaven! India and especially the state of Rajasthan is promoting plantation of Jetropha plants to make hay while the sun is shining in this industry. Well though its a positive move from fossil fuel to renewable resource it involves plantation of this plant which has also been called HELL OIL by some of the farmers in India as it makes barren the soil where it shoots up. In other words it will not allow a single blade of grass to grow beneath it. Isnt that fantastic?? Where do you think are they planting these Jetropha plants hmm? in my backyard? No. They have planted the ste...
